This is not my area of knowledge, so I am completely ignorant about this. A fellow IT person in my dept. is turning off File and Print Sharing on all PCs to expose the Admin share to see the local drive. We use Novell for file and print and have limited extenal exposure. He undoubtedly has no concerns about outside threats. His goal is to be able to look at installed software, Internet Explorer information, etc. I have some personal files which I keep locally, and while I don't mind allowing access, I would like to know when he connects to my PC. ANyone have any suggestions?

If you turn of File and Print Sharing I think the admin share is inaccessible as you aren't sharing anything anymore...at least I'm sure thats what happend at my work.
Now turning this of can cause problems if you need to use software to push put patches as this usually use the admin share to get the files/patches to the pc.

His arguement is that in order to use some applications (like Symantec's Corporate Virus Software Mgmt. tools) he needs the admin share and w/ File and Print on it forces the Guest account. What he has done however, is allow himself to have full access to the local drive on every PC in the network.
I was able to solve my own problem however. I found a freeware application called Share Alarm
It is a little flaky but it does sound an alarm when someone accesses any shares on your PC. Thanks for the replies.
