Fields in a document

Is there a way I can lock down fields in a header and footer without locking down any other field codes in the main body text?
I have tried using the KEEPFIELDS in document properties Keywords section, that brings across all the details fine, but if a user tries to amend any data in a field in the main body text it won't let them, but I need them to be able to do this.
We are using Word 2000.

Any ideas?

Don't think you can REALLY lock headers and footers separate from the main document.

If they users do not need to do anything at all with the headers/footers, you could remove Header and Footer from the menu. This would not stop someone who really wanted to get at them, but it would remove temptation.

I was wondering if maybe I could run a vb script to allow the document to bring the data across, then unlock the document for editing.
I will have to dig a bit deeper.

you are going to have to explain further details. It sounds like the data will be coming in dynamically, includng the header footer data. Is this corect?

Hi,

Basically, we changed the letterhead over a few days ago, introducing a header and footer into every document. When we ran some tests on our thick client machines we found everything worked fine, however when we tested on thin client (citrix) we found that the header and footer (Includetext)information wasn't being brought across properly, but the stuff in the body text was.

We found the only way we could bring across stuff in the letterhead and footer was to insert the word KEEPFIELDS into the Keywords section of document properties, this works great, however now users cannot made any changes if they need to in the document now, as when it starts to print it reverts back to the old. We have tried checking the box in printing options 'Update fields', but this seems to cause a conflict and causes printer spooling problems.

So basically I was wondering if something could run, to drag all the information across first then unlock the document so users can make any changes if required.
Does this make sense?

Hi Helen,

Using INCLUDETEXT fields for letterheads is probably not a good idea, for a couple of reasons:
1) Any change to the letterhead will affect all existing documents too (ie open up an old document and it will display the new letterhead rather than the one it was created with); and
2) The letterhead won't be available on documents that are emailed outside your organisation or copied to PCs not on the network.

Beyond that, it sould like the problem displaying the INCLUDETEXT letterheads on Citrix may be a problem with that environment's configuration.
