Can anyonoe tell me if it is possible to change a "Key" field type from text to date format?

Generally speaking, no, and definitely not a good idea. You could do some back-end hacking, maybe, but when you upgrade and there's an updated data dictionary you'd really be in pain.
A better idea would be to create a user defined field and replace one of the key fields with it.
