Are you wanting a key on the phone as a message waiting indicator?

Not quite.
I have my main DN, and another key for our helpdesk -- 02 XMWK 7000 5555. I also have my main DN listed in CallPilot for the helpdesk's Message Indicator, which is great, however I would like to still have a big light in my face, rather than just a key with a message icon beside it. I've (somewhat) accomplished this with the aforementiond CallPilot setting, but with this configuration it would be nice to instead use the blue lamp for helpdesk, and the main red one for my personal voicemail.
For example:
Top left, designate for helpdesk voicemail.
Top right, designate for personal voicemail.

The Feature Status Lamp is not used, as far as I know, on the CS1000, except when doing a firmware update. There is no way to control the light with the CS1000 / Copilot, as far as I am aware.
On the Nortel CS2000 (now owned by Genband and called Genband C20), the blue feature status lamp on the 1100 series phones illuminates when the phone is on an active call.

On the UCx from E-Metrotel the Blue light works as a MWI light for a general mailbox on the system for a shared Voicemail mailbox. So if you have 4 phones that share the same mailbox, you can program the blue light to show on all phones associated with that mailbox when a MWI is waiting.

Making it work with your current sets is not really the issue. The 1100 sets have a "switch controlled feature status lamp". The problem is that your current system doesn't support using the lamp in that fashion. As GordonKapesMZ4 mentioned, the eMetrotel UCX supports using it as a MWI. The CS1000 / Call Pilot does not support it. You'd have to replace / migrate the CS1000 with an UCX system. The UCX supports your existing phones, but the actual phone system on the wall or in the rack would need to changed.
The other possibility is that Avaya adds the feature to a future release of Call Pilot / CS1000 system software, but I don't see that as likely as they seem keen on retiring anything that is legacy Nortel and moving customers towards Avaya's product line. I doubt they will add any new features that will make someone want to hold on to their older phones any longer than necessary. Avaya has already announced the end of manufacturing of 2 of the 1100 series phones (1150 and 1165).

Just make an analog DN/TN the target of the message waiting, then it is easy to find many variations of large message indicators. No need to buy a new phone system. Voila.

Of course they would phase out the completely awesome 1165E set, I wouldn't expect more from Avaya.
