Fdisk 1

i am using win98, when i using startup disk, i try the command 'Fdisk' and it said 'Error reading fixed disk' .... any cure ??? i would like to unparition it and install win xp....

smiling...make another disk...go to start, control panel, add/remove programs, click on startup disk tab and create another one...once done...stick disk in...wait until it goes to an a:\ prompt type fdisk..it will proceed. it may ask u do you want to delete the primary partition you say yes...and it will ask u do want to delete the extended partition and you say yes...after that ...create your new partitions in both areas...then it will ask you to reboot. it will come back to an a:\ prompt and type
a:\ format c
it will then format..

Make a new startup disk (or download one from

http://www.bootdisk.com)

and also double check the Hard Drive is detected in BIOS, I am assuming it is a standard IDE drive?

Do you get any error messages during the Boot ?

You don't actually need to use win98 boot/fdisk if you're installing XP. Just boot from XP install CD and use its partitioning tools (you can remove exisitng and create/format new during the install process - assuming your hard drive is ok).

erm.... i detected the IDE during boot up and BIOS have it too... i have create a "NEW" startup disk and try Fdisk... it still fails.. 'Error Reading Fixed disk' ..... what the *BEEP* is going how T_T

i will try the bootdisk when i came back from school...

Either you have a bad hard drive, or you have something that is hiding the boot sector from you.
You may need to get the manufacturer's diagnostic disk to do a zerofill/lowlevel rewrite of the boot sector.

or fdisk /mbr might put new bootstrap code in place of whatever now exists.
