What's your favorite version of Delphi and why? I'm having a difficult time deciding which version to go with. I heard that Delphi 5 is supposed to be the "best version" to date. Then again, I heard the same thing about Delphi 7 and Delphi 3. I just want to collect the opinions of others on what they think is the best version of Delphi.

Thanks

If Borland have done what they should have done over the years then each subsequent version should have improvements over the previous one.
That is they should be listening to what users say they would like changing and fixing bugs that show up.
So the most recent version 'Delphi 2005' should be the best.
But this has been clouded somewhat by the introduction of .net support into Delphi 2005

I tend to agree with the reviewers/tutorial writers in the magazine I subscribe to.
They say that Delphi 7 is as good as it gets, if you don't want to go down the .net route (which I don't).
Others in this forum may well disagree.

Steve: Delphi a feersum engin indeed.

I've used 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7. At their various stages I've found 5 and 7 to be the best. I'm very unlikely to consider 2005/.Net since I use VB.Net, so I'll be sticking with 7 which I now use mainly for single file Win32 .dlls. The most annoying thing about 7, however is that help is cluttered with Kylix which makes it unnecessarily tedious to use. There should have been seperate help files (unless someone knows how I can get rid of the Kylix nonsense - I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in anything to do with Linux)

If I had to choose between D7 en D2005, I would go with 2005, same or more language features as D7 but the IDE is far better.

I've used every version from 2 to 7 and I think it's fair to say that each version was an improvement on the last. I can't see any reason at all to choose an older version such as 5.
Whether you choose 7 or 2005 comes down to personal preference of the IDE, and whether you want the .net capability or not

Used 3, 4 and stopped at 6. Probably I will not go .net so version six suits my needs.

Guys,;

keep in mind that the .net version also includes the Win32 personality...

I use Delphi 6 as it meets all of my company's needs.

Personally i just use Delphi 7 as it is the most stable in my view. Although like any poor programmer i an make it crash :p

Delphi, Delphi, Delphi. Oi! Oi! Oi!

I've used 1, 3, 4 and 6. Still using 6. 6 is definitely far better than any of the previous ones I've used. Occasionally I hear things about alternate IDEs for Delphi - anyone use something like this?
