I am getting the following errors - they vary slightly - but here are two of them I have gotten:

- A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C002800 in VXD VMM(01)+ 000001800.

- A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C027:E00400 in VXD VMM(06)+ 000003004.

- A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C027:E00E in VXD VMM(06)+ 00000300E

I have windows 98 and these errors are driving me nuts. I do not like seeeing the blue screen so often

ski , I am able to boot up my computer most of the time without any issues - reading through the clean boot you mentioned might not show up becuase as I said, most of the time, it doesn't occur or occurs at different times - like I did a full virus scan using Norton and part way through it the error came up..... sometimes while our kids are playing a game ....it vaires which makes it tougher.....

I suggest that you look at the cooling fan. I had similar irregular blue screens and I thought it was virus.

I changed the cooling fan and the problem was solved.

Thinking back it should have been obvious what the fault was. It started to occur when the machine had been on for some time. It never happened when it was switched on in the morning.

Rob2806 ,

I checked both fans and both looked god and were running. I think I have a registry problem and I ran Norton Registry checker etc and cleaned it up - but I think h=it hasn't gone away... any other suggestions......

Use System File Checker and Reinstall VMM32.vxd

How do I ---- Use System File Checker and Reinstall VMM32.vxd - I am a novice with program changes etc.......

You need the original CD.....You Have?....
Ok....
There may be a "run" command to get to it, but for now just go
Start>Programs>Accessories>System tools>System Information.......
choose Tools....then System File Checker......
Choose "Extract One File from Installation Disc".....type in VMM32.vxd.....click "Start".......and you'll be prompted for CD.........
In "Restore from".....browse your way to CD drive and Win98 folder(D:\Win98)or(E:\Win98)...
In "Save File In".......browse to C:\Windows\System......choose OK......that's it......

Remember that these are the "Standard" default directories....where windows is installed......and they're correct unless you did somethin funky on the original install.....
Do a find for vmm32.vxd just to make sure it's in C:\Windows\System.......
In other words you're Windows directory could be C:\Win98.......or C:\My Windows....or C:\Main Folder.....get it?

Hope it helps

I had a very similar problem recently the cause of which turned out to be a new 128 MB RAM chip I had installed to supplement the existing 64 MB. When I removed the new RAM the problem went away.

I didn't hear any mention of a new RAM chipm being installed............did UUUUUUUUU???????????

Morrisman;
didn't mean to jump all over you're response..........and I hope you found a good replacement 128Mb chip as I'm considering doing the same.....
The Vmm32.vxd file is a compilation of virtual device drivers specific to each system....and replaced the config.sys and autoexec.bat files that were necessary in 95...this is why 98 can run well with no entries in these files......It can be overridden with entries in Config&Auto though......

Cougarfan;
The system file checker can also be accessed by Start>Run "Sfc" (no quotes), command line,
hit Enter,........I have a desktop shortcut for SysInfo which enables access to all info and many tools quickly....

I meant the Vmm32.vxd file - what will it do in laymans terms?

Fix your problem.......

This is a somewhat loose explanation as I don't yet fully comprehend every aspect........but i'll try.....

The Vmm32.vxd(protected mode 32 bit) file is actually a set of Virtual(v) Device(x) Drivers(d), hence, .vdd = virtual display driver.......this grouping of drivers is specific to the hardware on your computer.......and works in conjunction with io.sys and msdos.sys(real mode) to configure your system properly.....

Take a look here

Here's some more detailed info, if you'd like to read up(it gets complicated, just like all M$ junk).....I've noticed it's taken from the Win98 Resource Kit Book.....

I went to Windows 98 troubleshooting on my computer and it mentioned going to check all these vxd files and if not there delete them. I am confused and not sure what files I should delete - my VMM32 file has not been modified since 1998 according to the computer so what next .......
