I'm trying to install NT Workstation in a triple boot configuration on one of my machines. The partition layout is as follows:

First partition: FAT (Windows 98)
Second Partition: NTFS (Windows 2000 professional)
Third Partition: Empty 1084 MB
Fourth Partition: Logical drive inside Extended DOS (Used for misc. install files and such.)

This drive is a 14 Gig hard drive.

The error that it's giving me is as follows:

Setup has encountered a fatal error that prevents it from continuing.

Contact your product support representative for assistance. The following status codes will assist them in diagnosing the problem:

(0x5, 0, 0, 0x1)

Setup cannot continue. Press F3 to exit.

Any help with this one is appreciated.

Christopher

How were the partitions created...Fdisk or other? What types of partitions are they Primary, Extended, etc.

If the first partition is FAT, I would assume it to be 2gb. What size is the second (NTFS) partition? What partition are you trying to put NT on...the third? NT will bomb if you try to install it on a partition outside the 1024 cylinder limit.
Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com

All of the partitions were created using partition magic.. The first partition is an primary partition and the rest are extended partitions..

You are correct in assuming that the first partition is 2gb the second partition is an 8gb partition.. I am trying to install NT on the third.. Which probably means that that is why I'm not having much luck installing on this machine.. Any ideas as to how to get around this problem??
For IDE drives there is no way around this that I am aware of. SCSI drives and controllers can use a translation scheme from SCSI Rom to get around the 1024 limitation.

This limitation is due to the way the Bios handles drive parameters as it only allows 10bits for cylinder info. Since NT uses INT13 to get the drive parameters, you are stuck.

In your scenario, the only way I can think of to do what you want to do is to use Partition Magic to decrease the size of the NTFS (2nd) partition so that your NT (or 3rd) partition will fall within this limit. By using the ATAPI.SYS from Service Pack 4 or later, the size of the boot partition can be up to 7.8gb.

Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com
