Here is the situation so far.

Mates pc strted to get errord then died. I re-installed win98se again for him. Still had same problems. He upgraded his mother board and chip, I formated the whole drive, took out all partitions then started from scratch. It is still having problems.

I ran scan disk and found a problem with the fat, it would fix the error but widows would copy over the fix so the scan had to start again and kept looping.

Is there any other way of fixing the fat?? or should he ditch the hd and start again?

Any suggestions or comments as this is becoming real pain.

Depending on where the bad cluster or sector is would be the deciding factor on whether to salvage the hd or not. In general though, once it starts going bad, I wouldn't trust it. But if you want to try, you can make a small partition that doesn't have the bad cluster on it and use that portion of the drive. I have seen the bad part at the rear of the drive and been able to use most of the drive. Good luck.
