They have upped scanners to 9600 DPI or whatever, but you never see a word about scanning speed. I'm not just talking about data transfer. My scanner (a cheep UMAX) takes 15 seconds just for the bar to return to home after a scan. Are there any plans for (reasonably priced) scanners that can do anything close to copy machine speeds?

well USB can be pretty good, but take a look at the OneTouch 8900 at vissioneer.com , its one with the fastest scan to finish time, there is a big difference, in having fastest transfer over the cable, than having fastest scanning speed (then transfer over the cable). Even with SCSI connection, the difference is marginal, if the scanner itself can scan very fast, considering it's JPG Compressed by most scanners, think about how much actual data has to travel the line, USB will usally suffice.

The total time includes: warming up the lamp, mechanical scanning
and data transfer. I had reduced the SCSI transfer speed from "10"
to "5" (whatever unit, may be Mbyte per second) doesn´t slow down
the speed for EXTERNAL devices like scanners, filmscanners, cameras
and tapes, but the safety is much higher. Be aware: uncertainties in the
SCSI transfer require repeated transmission, then extremely slow !
In Germany, I heard, we can purchase ONLY slowed down drivers, which
should prevent people from scanning=stealing too much.
But the English version is not faster. Who can me tell me more about this topic ?
Based on HP 6100C and HP 4c.
Scans should be NEVER transfered JPEG. It´s essential to have a look on the
physical/optical quality. -----G.Hoffmann

Can any of you suggest a good scanner for a busy, small corporate office? It must have a doc feeder, but not be an HP. Thanks
