Hi All,

Quick question for anyone in the know. Hoping this is the right place to put this. let me know if not.

I've a site at the moment that has fan/ac errors on two separate 650s. One of three fans in each array is down so i am suspecting the fans to be the issue. I am trying to swap out the fan array to new one (if we can source the part). I have already tried to do this once, however the fan array we received was the new model (fixing screws on the top and bottom of the array) but the 650 on site was the older model (slightly taller array with slots rather than screws at the bottom).

Question is this. The documentation i can find only mentions the newer type of array and that it is a hot swappable component. Does anyone have any experience swapping out the older type? Is it still a hot swap?

Cheers for the help!

Are you sure you actualy have a G650 and not a MCC or other type of legacy cabinet , as im pretty sure 99.9999999999999% that the mechanics of the G650 have never changed , can you take a picture of the cab and post.

ACSS (UC/SBCE/SM/SME)

Not that they mean a thing anymore , get a brain dump pass the test crash the system.

To be honest, i thought that myself before i was sent to this job! There are two chassis types for the 650.

I've since had confirmation that both are indeed hot swappable so I am going to go ahead with the works. I'll report back if i find out anything else weird or wonderful when completing it as it may help someone else in the future. There is not too much by way of information on either the process or the two chassis types!

See below for the pics of the arrays. Apologies if i've messed this up. It's a strange upload process for this site!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Bear in mind the actual cabinet size and card placement etc are identical across both models, so it's easily assumed there is only one model! It's no wonder we engineers get to look like complete idiots on a customers site from time to time [banghead]

G650 fan removal/replacement
! WARNING:
WARNING: You can remove the fan assembly while the system is running, but you must replace the
new assembly within 60 seconds to avoid a thermal overload.
To replace a G650 fan:
1. Place the new fan assembly close to the G650.
2. Loosen the thumb screws on the fan assembly, and pull it straight out
as shown in Figure 58: Removing the G650 fan assembly on page 292.
3. Disconnect the fan cable.
4. Connect the new cable and position the new fan assembly.
5. Tighten every thumb screw on the fan assembly.

lol, i know, right? i was half expecting the mission impossible 'this will self destruct in 5 seconds' message when i finished reading the instructions!

weird thing about this is...if the fan is broken, why care about a 60 second thermal overload?!?! in this case only one fan is broken so the rule still applies.

Thanks for the reply, the official mention of the two models is most reassuring!

W
