I wnat to open a program with a filetype that XP does not recognize. It then gives me a list to choose from that is restricted to what is in the Program Files directory. The program I want to use (Kedit) is not that directory as it is installed stand-alone. I select Browse and I locate Kedit. I select Open and XP ignores it and just goes back to the box listing all of the programs in Program Files directory and does not open the file using Kedit.
I tried moving Kedit to the Program Files directory but XP still ignores it and does not even list it.

When it returns you to the application list, your new selected program should appear in the list and be selected, you are saying it doesn't appear in the list.

You could also use the Tools->Folder Options->File Types dialog to create a new association for the file type.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
