used a known good laptop (ie use same laptop yesterday to do exact same) - ran nwdploy and the remote server upgrade to 6.5 (1.1 overlay) all went ok - server rebooted - did all the usual stuff laptop sat a long time at waiting for server to come back up then message timeout try to login again when i did that it said fatal error look at the ni logs

the 2 bits are
util.CopyEngine
Informational: CopyEngine.copy:Error opening output stream: path
netware://Servers/MARS/FileSystem/sys/recopy/system, file niagent.nlm

i havent rebooted server again since this - ds is loaded and all looks ok but obviously it hasnt asked for licence etc and nmas logins etc

where should i go now - i didnt see much point fumbling tonight as it's not needed to 9 so i can get in at 8 tomorrow hopefully armed with some tips

i assume first step is to install a licence via imanage - then reboot server and see if i get any issue
then if i update to 8.7.3.1 - will this reapply all the nmas bits or ?

sorry this is long

So the upgrade bombed, but what OS and DS version does the server report now?

I'm wondering if you can at least get to remote console, get to the gui screen, and just go through the add product, point to CD1, and then it will basically do the upgrade again but hopefully not fail. It should rebuild everything it needs to get the server up and happy.

I don't trust remote upgrades, but haven't tried one for quite a while.

On another note, I can't believe how many people have servers named "MARS".

the version has upgraded properly
ds was already at the 8.7.3 level
server displays as a 6.5.1 -
derepair from other server shows it's syncing ok
ds and time etc

yhe only part of the install to go is the licence , nmas stuff and i think maybe product registration

i think i will install licence from imanage
reboot it and see what it says and see if the products have updated if they have and it seems ok then i will update to 8.7.3.1 and maybe sp2 (been on hols just notice it was out today) - if not go the cd route from gui

like yourself never been a remote install fan but to be totally truthful when we first got the 6.5 disk we rebooted a server and slapped it going - never seen the upgrade server option - looked like it was going to do a new install so stopped - used a workstation and nwdploy it and it was ok - so never bothered reading how you do it

i've done about 30 now like this and only this and one other issue - other one was a nsscfg file issue

well - i install a licence and then rebooted

it started the bit like the upgrade after server boots but never lauched it's gui
time wasnt on my side so i crank up dhcp , grpwise , backup exec , broker - all ok and version ok

ndpsm failed with weird error - basically load some nlm - it's there but no joy - i could route the printing another way so left it just now

i'm burning sp2 just now so i think i will burn the 2 cd's then do an upgrade with this and see what happens

anyone any idea when it boots how it knows to start the install part - i'm assuming that if i rebooted this just now that it would do it again - when it does this it doesnt lot all the autoexec - it's like it runs a temp file

Terry, I see what's happening. You're stuck inside a temp install of the server. After you have done the first portion and then it reboots, it comes up and does everything with a temp install and uses DHCP to get an IP address. DS opens and everything, but the server isn't really running 100%.

I can't remember what file that controls this behavior, but i know it's on the C: drive. I think it may be the startup.ncf file.

You need to get the commands out of there so it will load the server normally, then you can reassess the situation and go from there.

Terry, here is your answer..

Short Version
----------------
Find the file C:\NWSERVER\CONFIG.NW. Delete it and then load Server. This will allow the server to load normally.
After you have done that, find out what works, what doesn't, then resolve any issues.

Long Version
----------------
After your failed install, the server was stuck in it's Temporary install mode. But it wouldn't ever clear it and just load. Nor would it finish the install like it should. If you step throught the server load process, you will notice that immediately after you type "SERVER" at the C:\NWSERVER\ prompt, you will see that it says "STARTUP.NCF will not be executed" even though you did not give it any startup switches. Once you delete the CONFIG.NW file, it will allow it to load normally. If you look at the CONFIG.NW file, you will see that it passes the '-ns' switch as well as some other stuff that cause it to go through the hardware install and configurations.

Also, being the glutton for punishment that I am, I went through a remote install tonight and had the same problems you did. Once I removed the CONFIG.NW file, I was at least able to get the server up. Now I just have to see what is working and go from there. But I do remember now why I hate remote installs. :)

if above happens then you can use finishit.ncf to launch the gui and finish the upgrade
