Currently we have five (5) Citrix Metaframe XPa servers running on Windows 2000. The problem that I’ve been experiencing for quite a while now is extreme lag time when launching applications through the NFuse Web Portal from a remote ICA Client.
Current Setup:
We have multiple clinic locations spread throughout 4 different states; all of these locations connect to a secure web page running NFuse where they can access all of the company’s published applications. From here is where they perform all of there work.
The majority of our clinics have 2 pc’s, business class DSL or Cable and they all authenticate via SSL certificate. Of course all of the pc’s also have the Citrix ICA Client installed.
Current Problem:
When users click on published applications there is a huge lag time before it launches. I mean it can take up to two minutes before the application shows up on their screen. But, this only happens on published applications that do not reside locally on the Metaframe Server but are mapped across the network.
Example 1:
Say I have a network application called (X) that resides on a file server; however users in our remote locations need to access this application (X), so I publish it to the NFuse Web portal. Note: this application (X) is now being mapped from the file server to the MetaFrame server. So when users login to the NFuse Web Portal and launch application (X) it has to map this application before it launches. (This takes up to two minutes to launch) (See example two below for another twist)
Example II:
I am a field user and I want to launch Microsoft Word which resides locally on each of the Metaframe Servers, Citrix doesn’t have to map the application before it launches therefore, Word opens immediately.
So where we stand now is, If I launch an application that resides on another server rather than the Metaframe Servers it takes up to two minutes to launch, but if I launch an application that is installed locally on the Metaframe Server it launches immediately. So it kind of looks as if the reason there is a lag time is because it is mapping the application before it launches. (But that’s not the reason)
Example III (This is where things get tricky)
Now if I launch MS Word it opens immediately then I minimize MS Word and launch application (X) it opens immediately. Therefore I now have two applications open, but it launched application (X) right now without having a lag time.
I have also seen on occasion where users will launch application (X) and it will take the normal two minutes for it to show up on their screen, but under the Citrix Management Consol it will show that user as having application (X) running after about 15 seconds and if I perform a shadow on their current citrix session it will show the application screen, but yet the users don’t see this. So why would the Citrix Management Consol (CMC) say that application is running and the citrix shadow session show it, but it doesn’t show up on the users screen for up to two minutes?
Could somebody please shine some light on this subject?
Thanks
