I have tried to search for a solution to his particular problem and have tried numerous solutions. But for some reason (still) when I boot up my windows 2003 small business server, it takes forever to get past "Preparing Network Connections." I've turned off DNS services, gave it a static IP address and even messed with the registry, but it still take about 4 minutes to get past this part. Can anyone explain to me how to turn this off? Thank you.

Sounds like the permissions are messed up on your Default Domain Controller Security Policy.

Also, you NEED to have DNS running on your SBS Box so turn that back on.

I encountered a similar problem, had the same symptoms but also could not download from Windows Update. There are a few MSKB articles that tell you how to fix this. This one gives a list of the required permissions.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Just read the KB and set the permissions manually that are specified in the KB.

Are you sure this is the correct tech net article? I am unsure which part of it describes how to repair the group policy.

Yes, I believe the items that will resolve your problem are setting

Take Ownership of files and other objects
Manage auditing and security
Restore files and directories
backup files and directories

That is what resolved my issue.

Again as stated above there are a number of KBs I found when I was troubleshooting this. They all present this same table of permissions. If you are in doubt then I suggest a little searching on the support.microsoft.com site. Using the key words for the above to help you find the KB that specifically talks about your issue, but as I have said that KB is just going to give you the same list of required permissions.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

This happened to me with workstations after I installed a new ethernet switch. The problem was a broadcast storm caused by two switches that were not compatible. Eventually I put an extra switch between these two switches and the problem was solved.

When I click on Properties on each of these items, I can not add or make any changes. Most all have Administrators lsited with the last two having also backup operators and server operators.

Any thoughts?

Yeah sounds more like it.
Only one way to find out! A bit of overtime for you this evening!

Whats strange is when I first install Windows 2003 everything is fine, its when I run the updates that I start getting this issue.

Just to note this seems to have been fixed in SP1 for 2003 and when you run the security lock down tool.
