External Recorder Devices? 1

I have an HP Omnibook XE3 with a PIII Processor. I have upgraded to a 60 GB hard-drive, added 256 mb Ram(replacing a 64 Mb stick) thus with 320 now and have installed Windows XP Pro SP 2. I have an adapter for the PCMIA slot which upgrades to USB 2.0 and would like to run an external DVD Writer utilizing USB.
Most System requirements I see on retail drives stipulate PIII with 800Mz processor and I know my laptop is not that fast.
Can anyone help? Has anyone had experience running Externals with less speed than stated above?

Yes - won't work. Also your video board probably isn't up to DVD use.

I just read your reply and first, I wish to thank you for your reply.
2nd I want to provide more info that may modify or confirm your reply.
I didn't say that the processor was a PIII,(550). It came with Win 98 SE and has USB 1 or 1.1 built in. It also has a DVD/CD Combo but I don't know if it will write even to CD. I had just installed the XP OS when I installed the new HDD and increased the memory. There is no burner software installed. I am not sure how to tell if the combo will burn CD's if I installed burning software, without doing so. This is a rescued notebook that was inoperable due to HDD failure and I don't have the specs.

Use a program called "Everest Home" (free) to see exactly what model the CD/DVD is. Then do a "Google" search for that drive to find the specs. If you have to buy a "burning" program, try "Nero" (

http://www.nero.com).

I believe you can download a free trial to see if everything works OK. Have a fresh pot of coffee ready, it's a 27+meg file! If it is a "native" HP drive, you might be able to get the XP drivers from the HP web site.
