External modem turning on the PC

You know how that external modems connected to the serial port can cause your PC (which is off) to turn on when the phone rings, or when you turn the modem on or off when wake on ring is enabled on your motherboard?

Well, I need to know what happens that makes the PC turn on.

Why?: I am looking for a way to make a PC turn on by sending a signal to the serial port. I know of all the other ways to turn on a PC, I just need to know this about the serial port: How does it work, how can I simulate it?

Thanks in advance for your help,
KyferEz

No, that doesn't help. That is dealing entirely with the internal wake on lan, and does not work the same as attempting to use the serial port to do this.

I did neglect to mention that the modems use Wake On Ring WOR, sometimes called Wake on Modem, and that what I am trying to do is a part of WOR. I know that if I had a modem, I could simulate ring easily. However, that is not my goal.

My goal is to simulate what the modem would do to turn on the PC via serial port. I am an electronics engineer, so this should not be difficult to design something to do this - if I knew how it worked. I have searched on google, and google groups, and have not found what I need. There is very little documentation that I have been able to find on how WOR works with external modems.

If someone has an external modem that supports WOR and an oscilloscope, maybe they could test what happens on each serial line when there is ring?

Thanks,
KyferEz

You could get one of those led port monitors to see which lines the modem is activating when it rings in but I'm sure one of the OLDER hardware guys will know this. (MODEMS??)

Without having a motherboard that works that way I would suspect that it would have to do with putting a voltage on the ring indicator pin on the serial port.
Pin 22 or pin 9. Also without having done it I would suspect that it would be +5 volts on 22 with respect to pin 7 (db25) or on pin 9 with respect to pin 5 (de9).
