i am dialing the internet through an external modem which is getting it's telephone line through a pabx but i keep on getting this message "no dial tone" i have read the manual and it says that i have to change the settings of the modem by using the AT Command and select it to use blind dialing. i have used hyper terminal but it doesn't save the changes, which other terminal service can i use to edit the modem configurations so that it saves the changes i make. The model of the modem is CNet External CN5614XE.

Please help.

Within the properties of the dial-up connection there should be a place to change the properties of the modem. Within here, ussually under the connection tab, there should be a place for additional commands.

Whenever the machine dials anything it automaticly sends an "ATZ" to the modem which resets any commands set previously, so the AT command you have to send needs to be after the initial ATZ.

The only other suggestion I have for you is there may be a selection for "wait for dialtone before dialing" in the configuration of the connection (Most likely in the same place mentioned above. The properties of the modem WITHIN the properties of the connection. If you do it this way, all the commands / changes to the modem are set for the connection and ONLY for the connection, no other dial-application will use those commands / changes.) If you want this change made perminatly, the best place to change the properties listed above is within the control panel under "Modems".

You change the settings and then you write the changes to the modem's memory. In hayes command set it is at&w. It will help if you have the manual. Ed Fair

Have you got any messages waiting on the line? A relative of mine couldn't dial up until she'd listened to (and got rid of) all waiting voice messages.

If its not that:

* Try the modem in a different line

or

* Try a different cable

Do a search on the hard drive for modem*.txt on your hard drive. This text file is a record of what happened when the modem was trying to initiate and what went wrong...and may also be invoked in the settings Jeff221 was referring to, accessed by choosing the diagnostics tab and choosing Query Modem. You'll also know the modem failed by watching the diagnostics run. The Advanced tab on the same dialog box is where you add the intialization commands.

Okay, I'll pour another cup of coffee and wake up a little more.
Meanwhile, I realized as soon as I posted that the test I describe only tests that the modem is properly installed and is communicating with the computer correctly, it doesn't do the dialup routine.
Doh! (he says, yawning)
