External Harddrive Compatibility

I have an external hard drive that was recently formatted on WindowsXP using FAT32 but it is not recognised when plugged into mac OS10 via firewire.
Prior to this, the same hard drive was formatted also using FAT32 (not sure which windows OS) and WAS recognised by Macs with OS9 and OS10. Any advice on what could be wrong? It still works perfectly on Windows.
