External Hard Drive Recovery?

Last week I went to restore my desktop from the original factory disks. Beforehand I backed up all my files to my External Hard Drive. I left the drive plugged during the restore process without thinking about it.

After the system restore finished i went to copy all of my files back and they were gone? It was like the entire drive was just overwritten. I have no idea what happened. I have not done anything with the drive since then and was wondering if there was any way to recover these files?

I have been using this drive for more than 5 years with 0 problems and cannot figure out what caused this.

Any ideas?

You ended up formatting that drive as well when you reinstalled.

Neither are free, but I believe G-D-B has a free version which just shows you if a recovery is possible.
