extending runtime on battery power 1

I have a dell inpiron 8500 laptop. I want to maximize runtime on battery power by setting up a hardware profile that disables all non-essential devices. So far I have disabled the NIC, modem, cdrom but what else could I disable. This doesn't seem like much.

The next thing to do in that profile would be to disable any services you don't need - you may be able to get down to @14 running processes at boot, depending on how and what you will be using the laptop.

If there are periods of inactivity, you could try setting the screen and the hard disk to power off after say 3 or 4 minutes. However, I'm not sure the hard drive would take kindly to being powered up and down again on a regular basis. But it all depends on your particular scenario and how much you value the extra few milliamps of power you'd save...

Try dimming the display. This may save a little bit of power.
