exporting into Data Only (xls) problem

Hello Friends,
When i do a export into data only xls format,
this option is not working: "column width based on objects in the page header." or even if i try to give a fixed column length that's not reflected in the exported xls spreadsheet.
does anyone have any idea why this might be.
