Exporting Certificate and private key

I need to export a certificate from a clients server to back it up and import it on another system for a disaster recovery procedure. When I try to export it the option to export the private key is greyed out, it is non-exportable.
Can I still export this cert and import it on another system and have it work? Won't the system names be different and I'm not sure how the private keys work.
