hey, im creating dv footage and i want to export it to my vcr in a TRUE widescreen mode. i need to fit it into 640x480 with black bars on top and bottom. please help. adobe people dont know what theyre talking about. thanks!

hey simon,
this problem is actually pretty easy to solve. the guys at Adobe will tell you to just clip the frames by applying black mattes on the top and bottom, but that's obviously not true widescreen format (you're losing a lot of the frame that way).

let's say you have a video track on the timeline that is 720x405 pixels in size (i think that's around 16x9). if you plan to export that image to a 640x480 size (4x3), while preserving the 16x9 aspect ratio, do this...

1. right click on the clip on the timeline.
2. choose "Maintain Aspect Ratio"

then, when you're ready to export the file, do this...

3. go to your EXPORT menu
4. choose a frame size of 640x640 (which is 4x4 or 1x1)
5. export the video

now, you should eventually produce a perfectly square black image, with your rectangular video frame in the middle (a widescreen image).

(if you'd chosen to export it as a 4x3 image (640x480), you'd still have a widescreen video, but the video itself would have been centered incorrectly on the screen).

i'm sorry if this makes no sense. it's actually really simple, but really hard to explain briefly, why this works. i hope it works out for you.
