I have an export dump from 8i and need to get it into 9i? Will 9i recognize this format or will I have to do this another way?

What is the easiest way to move an 8i database instance to a 9i database instance?

Thanx

JB

Hi

You just use your import program from 8i.

However Oracle 9i import program can read an 8i export dump file – but normal you use the “right version”.

Well – if you got a huge database with lots of procedures, stored packages, schemas and so on – it is best to upgrade using Oracle Data migration assistance. But you lose some flexibility and control, especially with regard to setting initialization parameters.

It also depends – can you have another server running or both instances on the same server – disk space and so on, when use database export and import.

The file system in Oracle 9i is the same as in 8i.

When moving between different Oracle versions, you have to export with the lower version if you want to import into a higher version. Then everything is OK.

The easiest way to move from 8i to 9i is to migrate the database if you don't need the 8i db. If you still want to have 8i - then export/import is the easiest way.

Hope that helps,
