Explorer.exe error

My Win2000 system often crashes when using Windows explorer, while searching for a file to open or saving a file to a particular directory, etc. It basically locks up and I have to shut down and I lose whatever may have been open.

The MS knowledge base says the error is a result of an incompatibility with IE6 and to go back to IE5.5. I have done that but it doesn't fix the problem--

Has anyone else had a problem like this? If so, how did you fix it?

Did you check for any viruses on the system?

Yes, we have Norton Corporate Edition with LiveUpdate--no viruses--it also has acted this way since we got the system.....it doesn't happen all the time....
