Although I also posted this problem in the McAfee forum, I'm thinking that this problem may not be a Viruscan issue, but an XP issue.

Problem started a couple of days ago. When I log onto my XP machine everything works fine. If another account is used to logon (Computer Administrator or Limited) get the following error:

Vshield error
Virus data files are missing
Unable to scan downloaded file

Checking the properties of Viruscan results in:
Virus definitions version 0.0.0
Virus definitions created 12/31/1969

The Task Manager indicates EXPLORER.EXE is running at 100%, so of course the machine is extremely slow. If you try to run any application or log the user out, you get in this loop with the above Vshield error and you have to click OK then you get the message:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Then one of those Microsoft "send or don't send problem report" messages pops up, then the cycle is repeated. The only way I can log the user off is through Task Manager, under the Users tab.

At first I thought it might be a permissions problem or path problem, but like I said it works fine for me but not other administrator accounts.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds more like a McAfee problem to me. Didn't they update their Virus Scan engine about two weeks ago. That's always a risky time. Have you tried re-installing McAfee to see if that fixes the problem.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with McAfee.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks linney. The System Restore did not have any impact on McAfee files being returned to an earlier version so that didn't work. The SAFE mode would not allow me to login except with the Administrator and my account, not the other users, so that didn't help. But uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee's software fixed the problem. Really appreciate your thoughtful suggestions.
