We have an older Gateway 2000 computer that we loaded Windows 2000 Professional in April. Lately, we noticed that Explorer.exe would fail and restart. In the error log I found some entries since September for WinLogon:

"The Shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restrated"

While I was attempting to do work on the computer, I noticed that going into explorer more than a few times a session would bring up this error. As an additional piece of information, I removed a backdoor.trojan virus from the computer (I think) recently.

I am not sure if there is any relationship, but often near the WinLogon message, there is a error "WMI ADAP was unable to load the perfproc.dll performance library due to an unknown problem in the library.0x0"

While I'm at it there is also another error "Value named in IRPStackSize in the server Registry key LawmanServer\Parameters was invalid"

Any ideas about what is going on and how to fix it?

I've had a similar problem with Explorer and Windows 2000, what version of Explorer do you have? If it is 5 or 5.5, then this is where the problem lies. For some reason this version of Explorer and W2k cause various problems (shell being one of them) and the only way to resolve it is to simply upgrade to Explorer 6. This has cured this bug on a number of machines I am responsible for.

I hope this helps. by Lastwords,
