I'm doing some contract work for this guy who has contracts with multiple companies in my area. One of the companies has a setup of 1 NT4 DC and 1 W2K server. Currently they are using good ole MS Mail and want to continue using it. They wanted to be able to do group scheduling...so the guy suggested Exchange 2003 (a little overkill I know). The software arrives and will not install on the 2K box because its on an NT Domain with no AD. I suggested upgrading the NT box to 2k which he does not want to do. I also suggested using Ex 5.5 instead which is not an option either. He mentioned creating 2 domains...keeping the NT4 Domain intact and then setting the 2K box up as a DC and installing EX 2003 on it. I'm not sure if that will work. Any ideas?

Nope, wont work.

If he wants to use exchange 2003, then he will have to upgrade the NT4 server to windows 2000, AD. Then install exchange 2003.

The setup suggestion was 1 NT domain and then another separate 2K domain with Exchange 03 installed on it. I did not clarify that sorry. Couldn't we setup a trust relationship between the 2 domains so that data acces can be achieved on both servers?

Why in the world would anyone still want to use NT 4? If he is that cheap, he should just go to Linux.

I have no idea why....I certainly would upgrade the NT4 box and be done with it.....but I guess he has his reasons.

installed AD on the 2K server.....and set it up as a domain controller. Installed Ex03 on it and setup mailboxes for the users. All data is accessable between the NT Domain and the 2K domain. Still have to see if users on the NT can logon to Exchange...

done....works like a champ!
