Exchange Server Name Confusion

I have installed the Internet Mail Connector on Exchange 5.5 and was about to setup the MX record at the domain registrar and ran into a problem with accepting the server name. The server that runs Exchange is called YATES_IL_NT and the mx record will not accept the "_". There is no DNS server on my network (the network was setup years ago by someone else long gone) and would like to know how to go about setting this up.
