Exchange-Sendmail Difficulties

I am managing an Exchange 2000 server. Some of my users are having difficulty sending e-mails to a domain whose MTA is Sendmail. Most of the time, the outbound messages will get stuck in my server's queue and then users receive an NDR. We do not have a problem receiving e-mails from the Sendmail domain.I telneted (port 25) into the other server and I am getting a 220 reply. Some times, our e-mails are getting delivered, but most of the times, they are delayed and then NDRed. I've contacted the tech on the other side, but they maintain that their server is OK. I suspect that Sendmail is not properly configured and it does not properly resolve the names.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what I should look into or ask the other side to check?
