Good morning - I have a few quirks in the network centering around a Public Contacts folder.

One - When clicking on the link for a member that is contained in a group entry, the message "The name or distribution list has been deleted and is no longer a valid Address Book entry".

Two - Some users are unable to show the address book in the GAL. The option to show the Address Book is greyed out.

LDAP is not shown as a running service (it is not even shown)Nor is it shown as an installed Exchange protocol in the System Manager.

Any thoughts?

Did you recently export and import any of the mailboxes involved in this problem? That can cause the error. Relinking your objects can be kind of complicated, so let's see if it's something simpler.

A simple test for question #1: see if it's a corrupted entry in your nicknames file. Do a search on your computer for a file with a .nick extension. It should be in an Outlook-related folder. Try renaming the extension and then closing Outlook and reopening it. When you click on the previously mentioned link, does the error still occur?

By the way, LDAP is not a mail protocol. It's a protocol used to query the Active Directory and it never shows up in any of the places you mention. If clients are able to log on, and some are able to see the GAL, then it's not an LDAP issue on the server.

What version of Outlook are your clients on? Are you running SBS2003?

A search for the *.nick extension revealed no files with a *.nick extension.

And yes, the mailboxes are all imported within the last two weeks.

Yes, SBS 2003 and all clients are Outlook 2003 pushed from the server.

Thanks for responding!

Thanks Shack.. yes, I believe that is the problem there. I ran the routine against the list and was unsuccessful.. the secretaries will just be inconvienienced for awhile.

Any ideas why the ability to add the public contacts folder to the GAL is greyed out on some clients?

Yes, Exactly that. The second picture, Outlook folder properties. The check box selection is greyed out.

You may not have an Outlook Address Book locally. In the Outlook client, go to Tools and choose E-Mail Accounts. From there, choose "View or change existing directories" under the Directory heading. Add an Outlook Address Book.

Close Outlook and reopen it. Check out that option again and see if it's grayed out.

YES! It's always the little things.
