Exchange/Outlook performance

We are running an Exchange 2003 server and Outlook 200 and 2003 clients. Periodically users are experiencing exterme slowness when opening messages, changing folders etc... Has anyone else experienced this?

start a perfmon log and collect the following counters for the database drive:

Physical disk - transfers/sec
Physical disk - sec/transfer

What happens to these counters when a slowdown occurs?
