I have an Exchange 5.5 server in a NT domain, with a trust to an Active Directory domain. Users are in the Active Directory domain. They log into the Active directory domain and access their mailboxes on the Exchange 5.5 server. I want to install a new server in the Active Directory domain with Exchange 2000. What's the best way for migration in this case? The NT domain will then be removed. There are no distribution lists i need to migrate. Can someone give me an advice?

If you have only a few users (under 50??):
1. Export each user mailbox to a .pst file
2. Kill the Exchange 5.5 server
3. Setup Exchange2K, (if you have same server name you don't have to change the clients' settings)
4. Create new mailboxes for your users
5. (Connect each client to the Exchange2k server if not same name) and drag-n-drop each users' .pst file contents into the new mailbox.

We did this for 30 users per exchange server, took about 1-2 hours for each user (about 120MB mailbox per user) to copy in and out, but can have many going at once (depending on LAN speed.)

If you have many users, go for the M$ whitepapers:
"In-place Upgrade from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to Microsoft Exchange 2000"
"Migrating Mailboxes from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server"
