Hello,

I am running exchange2k on a sbs2k server. I am having issue with the maintainence of the exchange priv log files. Please read the fallowing:

1. I understand that The priv1.* are not logfiles but my mailbox store (the database where all
user mailboxes are kept).

2. I have already implemented some policies to restrict the sizes of all users mailboxes to keep the sizes of these files to a minimum.

3. I also made all users download the e-mail locally to there computer by creating pst on there outlook client.

The funny thing is that the priv logs are still the same size. They have not changed is size. Can someone please help me with this situation?

Most Appreciative,
:)

How big is your store? And since you know they are not log files, let's not call them that ok?

Having your users download the mail to a PST file instead of utilizing the Exchange server is a bit odd...most admins go the other direction because then you have control of backing up users mail.

favit - just noticed your other thread dealing with this same topic. You would have been better served to continue in the other thread instead of creating a new one.

I know is a bit odd but it was to save space. Which i thought it would do. I just tried to find a way around the other thread you have read. I thought by creating psts on user computers, it will shrink the size of those 2 files by elimating e-mail stored on the server. What do you think?

The data base will not shrink. The database will stay the same size but have empty pages. YOu will see in your nightly logs that ESE will have XXXXMB after online defragmentation.

If you want to shrink the database, you must do an offline defrag with ESEUTIL.

But having helped you create a decent and stable Exchange store, I now see that you've set up PST files locally. If anyone's PC fails, it has all gone. You've increased your network traffic and removed all chances of SIS.

You'd have been better off sticking with Exchange as it is meant to be.

Ah well.
