Exchange Instant Messaging and PopUps

Hello,
I have recently enabled Instant messaging for Exchange 2000 and now my users receive "Messenger Service" popups. Did I just open up my exchange box to the world? Are their any settings I am missing in order to lock this thing down. The instant messaging that I am doing is local only and goes across one subnet. Any help would be appreciated.
