HELP! I have been trying to follow Microsoft's
Exchange "Server Database Recovery" document
(url=/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/exchange2000/support/dbre
covr.asp?frame=true), and am just running into walls.
When I change the first store to be the same name as my
existing server's, and I reboot, I get errors saying the
store is inconsistent. I have tried a number of different
ways, and am still having no luck.
Has anyone run this successfully - including restoring the
original stores to the new server?
THANKS.

This is what I use.
In a disaster situation I would prefer to set up a brand new clean IS, get my users on line, then get the old e-mail back to them later.

It's not cheap but it totaly kicks a**. Just restore your edb and stm files anywhere (ie file server or big hard drive on a PC) and the little gem will open up the database and let you extract e-mail to psts. No security issues or anything. You can do keyword searches if you need to find a specific e-mail.

As an added bonus, you can kiss the need for a brick level backup agent goodbye.

That looks pretty neat, but it doesn't look like it would work with on-line backups.

it wouldnt, when restoring to a diff server you have to make sure the legacyDN, org and DB names all match.

It is supposed to also be able to extract data from an on-line backup done with Backup Exec and the Exchange Version of Windows Backup.

I will be trying it within the next week or so and will let you know if interested. There is a free demo for download.

Also, I know for a fact that it will not work with an Arcserv on-line backup. I wass told it would not, but I tried anyway :)

UGH! of course, I have been using Arcserve on-line backups!!! I finally figured out the legacyExchangeDN thing - it was not all that clear to me from the Microsoft article. We already have Veritas NetBackup in place, so I'm going to try to move the Exchange server to that and try again :p

I just used OnTrack Power Controls to extract mail data from an on-line backup performed with the Exchange Version of NT Backup. It works great!

Ok, but I can't even restore the database - so how can I use those powertools?
The strange thing is that I have 3 information stores. The second and third one restore fine, and I can mount them. The first information store, which was renamed to executive store, doesn't even restore. I get an arcserve error 364, can not write to database. How did you get arcserve to restore the database at all?

PowerTools does not work with an ArcServ on-line backup. It would work with any off-line backup or a NT or Veritas On-Line Backup.

ok, so back to my original question, has anyone had success with Arcserve - recovering to an alternate server in a different forest? Like I said, I have been able to restore the 2nd and 3rd info. stores, but the first one is just not happening at all. I have the legacyExchangeDN value set right, what else is there???

1, storage group must be same name
2, check off "store can be overwritten"
3, use the legacydn.exe tool to ensure its right, if you can get the other groups and not the first its likely wrong somehwere. 01110000
