I wanted to setup my exchange server to serve as the pop and smtp server instead of using a 3rd party to gather the company's email. Currently, users have a 3rd party as the smpt and pop3 servers. Each outlook client gets their email and then it gets stored on the exchange server. I was thinking of setting up the exchange server to poll from the 3rd party and then distribute to the users. However, i rather have everything in-house. Any recommendations?

Thanks

You have a few options open to you. There is a risk to let your mailserver do everthing.

Your first option is to use a 3d party software like POPCon.
It will retrieve all the mail and give it to your exchange server. It acts as a POP3 server. You can install it on any machine.

your second option is more involed. You need your Domain to registerd i.e Then you need to add your mailserver to your DNS server.
Registration and replecation of your DNS takes at least 48 hours. With this you also need a valid internet Static IP on your mailserver. By doing this you need to run Antivirus software as well as a Firewall to protect your mail server.
If not you will only run into a lot of problems.

Hope this helps.

thanks, i think the POPCon will probably be the least troublesome and require less admin work. I'm the only guy at the company so rather keep it semi-simple'

Thanks again
