Exchange Agent: \Pipe\winreg

In my ongoing struggle to get ARCserve to connect to the Exchange agent, I noticed that there is a persistent piped connection from the ARCserve box to the Exchange box to winreg.
First, am I correct in believing that this is a connection to the Registry?
Second, why would ARCserve need a connection to the registry in order to perform a straight IS backup?
