When you are in the sent items folder, go to view make sure you can view messages.
Also ensure that there are no filters or rules in place and that the "find now" or "find" option is not open.

A manual archive was done?
A message pruge was performed on the Server?
Are you strring the messages on the Exchange server or in a PST?
If I was you I would run a search on the entire mail box for these messages as users don't always tell the truth. It is possible that they have moved them to another folder - which is what I'd hope for otherwise you can get them back from your backup.
