I have Exchange Server 5.5 on a Win2000 Server (Service Pack 4) environment and have lost access to the Exchange Administrator Program, so I decided to try to re-install Exchange Server 5.5. I now get an error message when setup/install first starts up and doing its "checking for installed components". I am on the LAN Administrator Userid, and appear to have full authority, but can not seem to find this error message anywhere. The exact message that comes up is: "Microsoft Exchange Directory, ID No: DS_E_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_RIGHTS".

Anybody got a clue why this is happening?

Thanks,

Bruce

Had a similar problem in a DR scenario a while back when trying to add another server to the site.

Someone had changed the excg_srv_acct password but to add the server to the site the original server was running under the old password, which for me was a huge problem as I couldn't be sure the service would come back up.

To fix I did end up stopping all the services on the old exchange server and restarting them using the new admin password.

The long and short of it I think is that the DS and IS were running under the old password, once stopped re-keyed and restarted was able to add the new server.

If your re-installing maybe the original install will not let you install over without authenticating with the same account / password which was used to originally install the exchange.
