I just joined this and there is a lot of great advice but I need more....

I'm trying to recover an Exchange 5.5 server site and all we have is the backups of the PRIV and PUB. We know the name of the site and the server.

What steps should I take for recovery based on this information.

Thanks in Advance.

What software are you using to restore? You lost the server completely and starting from scratch?

Sounds suspiciously like an offline backup only.

rebuild the server exactly how it was, stop the exchange services copy the offline buckup back, run esutil (I think) and then your done.

Follow the excellant FAQ's from this forum they really do tell you exactly what to do step by step.

The email server was put out of service when we migrated 3 years ago, we are rebuilding it from tapes for an investigation.

The same happen a few weeks back to the company I work for. Ok. What I did was. Rebuild the server (domain/I created a test environment/create new accounts in AD as I was running 2k domain). Make sure server name and everything else is the same as what the tapes have. Applied all service packs (Windows and Exchange). When I restored using Veritas 10d, I selected the option to restore to a different server (even though is the same name) otherwise, Exchange services will not start. Make sure you uncheck No loss restore. Once Information Store is restored to server (do no restored directory as this will not work), in Exchange 5.5 you will have all mailboxes. From here, create new mailboxes in order to link what you have restored from tapes (this will show users under Recipients). In order to make sure that everything is working is to go to maiboxes and double click on a user, this will bring up the user's information page (if it comes up you should be ok to extract email). At this point I used exmerge to get the email from the different accounts I was looking for.

Hope this helps. It took me a few days to figure the entire process. There's probably an easier way, but this worked for me. Let me know if you have any questions.
