OK....we are getting an event ID of 1121 on our NT 4.0 server that houses our Exchange software. Here is the message:

>>The database has 1 megabytes of free space after online
>>defragmentation has terminated.

Should this have me concerned that there is only 1 meg left?? We've already hit our 16Gig limit once before.

Thanks for any help.

what about the size of priv.edb? How big is it?

If it is 16GB, worry. If not, how close are you?

Oops....my bad, that is for the PUB store, not the PRIV. However, our Priv.edb is 15.9 gig.

You need to check the same message but for the private store and quickly.

Basically whatever that message says is the total space you have before crashing (plus 100MB or so that the edb can still grow but thats not even worth counting).

The log event for the Online Defragmentation (Priv.edb) does not say how much space is left. Just that it "terminated successfully" (talk about bad wording from Microsoft)

Our Exchange server crashed once before, and we deleted about 10 gig of mailbox's from the exchange server, yet, the priv.edb did not shrink, it remained around 16 gig. It's our assumption that the Exchange server is now filling up the "holes" in the database that were created after our deletions. Hopefully we will be fine for awhile.

Thanks...

Thats correct it won't shrink unless you do an offline defrag but thats not really necessary. Look closer in the logs. Application log, source MSExchangeIS Private, ID 1221 its definitely there and thats on that.

Last one got chopped somehow, end should read

...and thats the only way that you can keep track of the space in that file.

The online defrag runs during the period that is defined as IS Maintenance on the Server Properties. If the window allocated isn't sufficient for a full pass through the database, you won't get an indication of how much space there is, and the process picks up from where it left off in the next window. Therefore you may find the 1221 messages are not regular. You may need a bigger window if the allocated window is frequently insufficient for a full pass.
