Exchange 2k event 529

In the security log of our E2k server we see multiple instances of source:security event:529 failed logon attempt:

2/7/2003 10:45:10 AM Security Failure Audit Logon/Logoff 529 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM server1 "Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: JWMAIL01$
Domain: domain
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package: NTLM
Workstation Name: JWMAIL01

These entries correspond to email being sent from one user's mother (from her office).
My question is why are these emails generating failed logon attempts?
