Exchange 2000 on Windows 2003

Hello all. I am planning on rolling out Windows 2003 to my servers. I have heard that you cannot install and run Exchange 2000 on Windows Server 2003, and that I would be forced up upgrade Exchange to 2003 as well. Can anyone provide any insite to this?

You've heard correctly, E2K will run on W2K Server, not W2K+3.

If you are running Windows Server 2003 you cannont install Exchange 2000. If you try it, it will install but will not work, because some things will be disabled.

True, and not true. Exchange 2000 do run on Windows 2003 server, but it is not possible to install on a 2003 server due to some active directory updates.

So what to do ?

Weel, you sure can install windows 2000 server, prepare the AD, then install exchange 2000, upgrade exchange to SP3, then run forestprep / domainprep from the 2003 CD, and then upgrade your system. Works very well, have alredy several system based on this solution.

Only thing who is not so good is you need to bilud a new forest to make it work.

That is looking for trouble later on. If they ever change the slightest thing in the AD structure on 2003, your Exchange 2000 will fail badly.

Avoid messing with workarounds, certainly in a business environment!

MS will NOT support anything they tell you NOT to do, do it anyway, you will be on your own after one of the coming SP's.
