I have a strange problem that I've been trying to fix for the past two weeks. I've seen posts here (did a search) that have the same problem, but none of the solutions thus far offered have worked in my case. I'll try to explain the full scenario in details and hopefully it will neither be too much information nor too difficult.

Basically I have a Windows 2000 Small Business Server machine with Exchange 2000 Server installed on it. All client machines are running Windows XP w/ Office XP.

Previously, clients would log onto their machiens locally and access mail through POP3 servers going to an LDMI mail address. Also they had an existing Exchange profile that was set up (on the server and client-side) that was not being used at all.

The goal was to switch things about so that everyone would log onto their machines via a Domain account login, would continue to use POP3 for organization e-mail, and then use the Exchange server to coordinate calendars and such.

Also, the usernames needed to be changed so that they no longer reflected their names but their positions. For instance, John Doe, Manager would log on to the domain as "manager" instead of "bob.jones".

So here's what happpened:

Old usernames and corresponding mailboxes were deleted from Active Directory and new usernames were set up. The clients are able to login to the domain accounts successfully. All mapped network drives have been remapped. POP3 email works as expected. OWA works as expected. However, getting Outlook XP to connect to the Exchange server using the new usernames does NOT work.

If I put in the name of the Exchange server and the user's exchange account, I get a variation of the "name could not be matched to a name in the address list." If I put the domain name into the exchange server box along with the mail account, I get "Outlook could not log on. Please check network settings..." etc.

Entering the IP address of the Exchange server also does not work.

Now, I have one machine that is still set up in the old way. I kept his old mailbox, but connected it to his new username. He still logs on locally on his machine and then uses Outlook XP to connect to the Exchange server. Upon opening XP, the user is prompted for username, exchanger server, and domain. All works well. This user is still able to connect to the server. All his networks settings match the other computers. Basically, why is he able to connect whereas no one else is? Also, if I put other user names into his login box, I can access their exchange accounts.

At this point, the exchange server is unused for the most part, so losing any data in it is not a problem. Just being able to check names and connect would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Alex
