OK guys -

Please help!

Installed a new 3Com network card in an existing NT 4.0 server. Everything seemed to load and work pretty well when I left last night. This morning there was an error on the screen and the server appeared to have restarted (at least the desktop). All system tray items (norton, clock, etc) were gone but people could log in.

The error box was:

Dr Watson for Windows NT

An application error log is being generated:
explorer.exe

Exception access violation (0xc0000005), address 0x6200f28f

Do I need to re-apply SP6a after this network card install? Or is there somewhere else to look for more info on the module which caused this error?

Thanks for any ideas!

- Bob

loosing the icons is the result of explorer crashing and the system tray not being reloaded properly when explorer restarts itself.

in itself an explorer crash isnt particularly significant. Only if it starts happening more regularly.

It worth reinstalling the service pack, cos you've made hardware changes and incase any network files have been replaced by older versions.

Thanks for the info...

Unfortunately I wasn't on site to check the logs and system status after this crash, but do you figure the services like Norton AntiVirus keep running and just the system tray icon disappears or does it kill the service? That would be a problem, i.e. Norton not running....

FYI hasn't happened since that one time...

the services keep running but you loose the system tray icons. the only way i know to get the icons back is to reboot. I've had this happen to me on win2k. It's a right pain with programs that minimize to the system tray. :)
