I'm wondering if this is possible to do in Excel. We make bookcases and would like a quick way of creating "cut sheets" based on the sizes of bookcases on order. I can get our sales order program to export into excel a list of bookcases on order, model numbers in column A, and quantity on order in column B.

I'm thinking I'll have to create a worksheet with all the parts listed on it. What I don't know how to do is make the connection, or lay things out so that it will reference the exported quantities to determine the amount of parts needed. Also, some parts like shelves will be common parts used in all bookcases, with the shortest bookcase requiring one shelf, and the tallest 6.

If someone knows of an online tutorial or can give me a rundown on how I can go about beginning this project it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Raymond

Raymond,

This project is not for the faint of heart. To do it right, I'd look for an out-of-the-box MRP program, that incorporates, Orders, Schedule, bill of material, Work Center Routing, Inventory, Work Order release, possibly work content actuals.

In addition you might also need a nesting program that figures the optimum nesting layout of the aggregate of orders in the order time period.

Unfortunately, I do not know of one to recommend. I'd Google: for instance, I found this one which I neither recommend nor not recommend

Thanks for the link, their program appears to have all the features we are looking for and are now taking it into consideration.

Raymond,

Let me know how you make out and your evaluation of the software.
