Excel - Simple number format problem(?) 1

I have Excel 2000.
On a new workbook, I enter the number 1 into any cell and hit enter. The number comes up in the cell and in the box at the top as 0.0001.
I used the office 2000 CD to repair the program, but no difference.
I installed Excel 2002 in a different drive and its exactly the same.
I know it should be easy, but..........

Tools / options

'Edit' tab - uncheck 'Fixed decimals'.
