When trying to save an Excel or Word file to the A drive the program hangs. Attempts to use Task Manager to end process returns the following message: "This program cannot be closed. If it is being debugged, please resume it or close the debugger." Computer locks and must be manually powered off.

Looking at A: via My Computer, a new file is present, named simliar to a temp file.
Text files in notepad will save to the A drive.
Norton Antivirus was turned off - no change.

Thanks for any input.

I am having the same problem exactly. Just started on Friday. The computer is running Windows 2000 SP4 and Office XP. I reinstalled Office, ran updates, virus checks, spyware checks, removed all temps etc.

Have you found a fix? I read somewhere to try to reinstall IE. Also, I notice that files save fine in safe mode. This is a pain and is beginning to happen on other computers in the network also.

Thanks

No, we have not found an answer, but will respond if we do. Please update us on any progress you make. Thanks.

After going through MS suggestions and having no change, I downloaded lastest Spybot which found and cleared the problem.

I used spybot with the latest updates and it DID NOT clear the problem...any other suggestions? I have also run Ad-aware 6.0, PC Bug Doctor, and Registry Mechanic.

I even tried replacing the floppy drive thinking it may be the cause.

This did work after running Spybot, but returned to the problem later. We tried reloading Excel and IE. That cleared the problem for a day or two. I emailed Microsoft and have had no reply. If you have any success I would appreciate your feedback.

Hey guys, I think this may be the fix we were looking for. Just keeping you updated. I haven't tried it yet, what I have tried so far is just copying a known good Fastfat.sys file and pasting over the one on the computers with the problem as this is easier on my network. Some of the computers are at remote sites. I don't know for you guys if you have personal PC's, obviously you may not be able to do that :)

Issue 4
Description of issue: You cannot save files from Microsoft Office programs directly to a floppy disk
Microsoft has identified a problem in the Fastfat.sys file. This problem does not affect all systems. On systems that are affected, you cannot save files from Microsoft Office programs directly to a floppy disk. (Microsoft Office programs include programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.) Microsoft plans to provide an update to fix this problem on the Microsoft.com/downloads Web site.
Resolution
Use one of the following two methods to resolve this issue:
• A hotfix that addresses this issue will be available soon from Microsoft Product Support. If you install this hotfix, you do not have to install Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 – v2.
• Install Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 – v2.
This issue is fixed in Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 – v2.

I was finally able to get to the external sites of my network and have used the Update Rollup 1 and it has been successful so far. Just wanted to let you guys know :)
